Solar lighting can be good for remote places that need lighting but difficult to get mains electricity, such as garages, garden sheds or stables. During the day, the sun charges the light through a solar cell, which is connected to a battery that stores the charge. During the night, the solar cell obviously stops producing power and a photoresistor activates the battery to switch on the light, whereas a diode stops the current from flowing back into the solar cell.
You can also get solar security lighting, which can provide you with an efficient and easy way to provide movement activated security lighting, again where mains power is not accessible. Similarly, you can get solar panel kits for a couple of hundred pounds that are common for caravans, motor homes and boats. Although these kits may not generate as much power as their large and more expensive counterparts, they can be your first solid step into the world of renewable energy.
A range of solar lighting and other solar accessories are available from Solar Technology.
